Vacant Seats Controversy: NPP Canada Executive Criticizes Bagbin over Stalemate

A staunch Executive of the Canadian wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) William Akoto has expressed dissatisfaction with Speaker Alban Bagbin’s indefinite adjournment of Parliament following the Supreme court’s stay of execution of Bagbin’s declaration of four seats vacant.

William Akoto believes the Speaker’s move to suspend parliamentary business indefinitely for the second time reeks of partisan politics.

"It seems the speaker is part of the official NDC campaign team because his behaviour and utterances on this subject matter shows he wants to orchestrate a win for the minority before the general election in a democratic Ghana. A country that has been practicing democracy for well over half a century. How do you suddenly flip and fabricate such a political event in parliament?” Akoto asked.

On the recall of Parliament on Thursday November 7 2024, Alban Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely for the second time.This, the Speaker said was due to the lack of business order following the absence of NPP MPs from the House.

The Effutu MP and leader of the NPP Caucus in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin further clarified that the Clerk of Parliament had failed to print the necessary document which outlines the agenda for deliberation in Parliament, of which the session could not proceed as planned, leaving the NPP MPs unable to participate.
