UPDN Calls for members’ participation in ‘Red Band Protest’ against Galamsey
The United Press for Development Network (UPDN) is urging its members, media practitioners, and partners to participate in the upcoming “Red Band Protest Against Galamsey,” organized by the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey. The protest is set to take place today, October 10, 2024.
The event seeks to address the growing crisis of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, which poses a severe threat to Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and agricultural lands. This unchecked activity has jeopardized the livelihoods of millions and continues to erode the country’s natural resources.
UPDN has expressed its solidarity with the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey and other stakeholders dedicated to combating environmental degradation. In a statement, the organization emphasized the critical role of media professionals in raising awareness about the adverse effects of illegal mining and holding those responsible accountable.
“We believe it is the responsibility of every Ghanaian, especially those in the media, to amplify the message, expose illegal mining activities, and hold perpetrators accountable,” UPDN stated.
Participants are encouraged to wear red bands during the protest as a symbol of their collective resistance against galamsey. UPDN calls on all members to leverage their platforms to advocate for sustainable practices and urge government and law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against illegal mining operations.
The organization reiterated the importance of safeguarding the environment and protecting communities for future generations.
“Let us raise our voices to secure a better future for all Ghanaians. Together, we can make a difference,” they added.
The protest aligns with UPDN’s mission to promote press freedom, media development, and sustainable practices across Africa. Through advocacy and capacity building, UPDN empowers journalists and media organizations to uphold professional standards and advance public interest.
