University Administrators Call off Nationwide Strike
The Ghana Association of University Administrators has called off their nationwide strike. The strike was to avert critical issues surrounding conditions of service. This came in a communique dated October 11, 2024, after over three weeks of industrial action, which began on September 18.
The strike was called following GAUA's accusation that the government had failed to address critical concerns involving their working conditions, including the non-payment of certain negotiated allowances. According to the communiqué, the decision to suspend the strike was to pave the way for further engagement with the government on outstanding matters.
GAUA added that it expects good-faith negotiations with the government and that deliberations on outstanding issues should be arranged within three weeks, during which time the matter will address the problems specified in a Memorandum of Agreement signed on October 7, 2024. The association thus expects these talks to yield positive results for its members, who have been vocal over what they see as fair treatment and remuneration for their work.

Consequent to this development, all university administrators are expected to resume work on Monday, October 14, 2024, pending what seems to be an apparent truce in the ongoing labor dispute. How permanent this truce is remains to be seen, given the result of the ensuing discussion, against the backdrop of which further industrial action may not be ruled out.
The strike should see universities resume to normal business, much to the joy of inconvenienced students and faculty members. The two sides are set to enter into negotiations, with the government under the spotlight on whether they can meet GAUA's expectations within the three-week window.
