The MP for Amenfi Central says he is not concerned about his seat being vacated in the 2024 election since he plans to become an independent.

Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah, a member of parliament for Amenfi Central for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stated that he is not concerned about his parliamentary seat being declared vacant because he plans to run as an independent in the upcoming parliamentary election. He stated that his candidacy as an independent candidate is his only priority at this time.

He said that after paying his filing fee, the NDC treated him unfairly in the parliamentary primary and that, despite his status as an incumbent MP, the party nevertheless proclaimed his opponent to be an unopposed candidate.

He chose to become an independent for this reason when the party refused to let him run again on its ticket in the December 2024 election. Cynthia Mamle Morrison for Agona West and Kwadjo Asante for Suhum, two additional incumbent MPs on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, have filed to run as independent candidates in the December 7 parliamentary elections with the Amenfi Central MP.

The current Deputy Speaker of Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, is a fourth member of parliament who has filed to run on the NPP's ticket in the December 7 election.

After this, Tamale MP Haruna Iddrisu said in Parliament on Tuesday that they had been duped by the action and that they consequently wanted the Speaker of Parliament to proclaim their seats empty.

In a Tuesday [October 15] radio interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah claimed the NDC did not treat him fairly and voiced his displeasure with the organization's internal procedures. After supporting his opponent, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, as the party's parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, he accused the party of treating him unfairly.

"I've been treated unfairly. If the party intends to rerun primary, they should give everyone a fair chance. They took my nomination fee of GH¢45,000, only to declare my opponent unopposed. That’s unacceptable. If the people want me, I will stand as an independent," he stated.
