Tetteh Quarshie Hospital Staff Demonstrate Over Rampant Knockdowns
Staff at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital in Mampong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region hit the streets today in a peaceful demonstration against frequent pedestrian knockdowns on the road fronting the hospital. The demonstration, which was organized by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, has been provoked by an alarming pattern of accidents, with the latest incident claiming the life of a member of staff at the hospital.
The demonstration, scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2024, is intended to show authorities and the general public that the stretch of road is persistently dangerous due to speeding vehicles. Association leaders, hospital workers, and community members have come together to inform the public of the urgent need for safety measures. The protest route stretches from the hospital entrance past the Center for Plant Medicine Research junction and back, highlighting the importance of the affected area.
The GRNMA has since written to the Ghana Police Service for what it says is a peaceful walk to express their concerns, adding, "This is not a walk to disrupt the peace of this country." It demands the construction of speed ramps on this deadly stretch of road to safeguard staff, patients, and the general public.
This protest brings out a very important safety issue of great public concern, and an immediate intervention is needed from the government to avert further disaster. Voices from the hospital staff, through the GRNMA, are vocal in reiterating that safety cannot be compromised.
