Suspect In Violent Mamobi Incident Declared Wanted
The police have declared a search for a suspect identified only as "Fatau Motorway," who brandished a weapon during violent clashes between members of the NPP and NDC at Mamobi in Accra.
The incident sparked fears of rising political tension in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, and the Ghana Police Service quickly moved in.
In one video going viral on social media, Fatau Motorway is clearly seen in the thick of the clashes, with the police subsequently releasing his image and making an appeal to the general public for information that might lead to his apprehension. While it is not new, political violence has in recent times been an increasing concern both to the public and the authorities in Ghana. Though the ruling New Patriotic Party and their opponents, the National Democratic Congress, had lived with a record of rivalry, such violent confrontations threatened to dent Ghana's reputation for stable democratic elections.
The police have reiterated their commitment to conducting an intelligence-led operation to capture Fatau Motorway and other individuals involved in the unrest.
This follows a well-calculated operation to try and contain political violence so that the forthcoming 2024 elections are held amidst calm and security. In this regard, the Ghana Police Service has appealed for cooperation from all citizens, as public vigilance and cooperation would be what contributes to preventing further escalation.
The coming election demands that peaceful engagements between political leaders and their supporters, for the protection of democratic legacy, remain important.
