Security Agencies Promises To Restore Security In Bawku

In the wake of recent uprisings in violence in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, both the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have jointly summoned members of the public to assure them of their commitment to restoring stability and security in the area. This assurance follows violent clashes and highway attacks linked to ongoing chieftaincy disputes.

The return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile, re-ignited the violence in Bawku. His return has engendered renewed tensions among the local factions, leading to violent confrontations resulting in tragic losses of life. In handling the crisis, security personnel have deployed fresh personnel to contain the unrest for the safety of the public.

One of the recent spillovers of the Bawku conflict was when some armed men reportedly erected roadblocks along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, particularly around the Gbimsi area, and attacked travelers they suspected to have come from Bawku. The disturbing ambush left eight people dead and several vehicles badly damaged, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement.

The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, in a statement, announced the immediate deployment of a joint police-military task force to restore order in Bawku and secure the highway. The primary responsibility remains on them to maintain law and order in the area while ensuring that all travelers are safe and that they control the movement of vehicles along the affected roads.

The security agencies have appealed for calm and trust in the efforts at securing peace. They said the tightened security was necessary to bring an end to the violence, secure the highway, and ensure lives in Bawku and communities around were protected.
