Sam George Accuses NPP of Smear Campaign with Fake Photo
Sam George, the Member of
Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and newly appointed Minister for Communications,
Digitalisation, and Innovations, has strongly condemned the circulation of a
fake photo that falsely depicted him watching an explicit video involving two
men. The image aimed to discredit him, considering his vocal stance against
LGBTQ+ rights and his advocacy for the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana.
Addressing the issue on
X, Sam George attributed the smear campaign to political opponents from
the ruling NPP, who he claimed were upset about his appointment. He said:
“It is clear to me that
the NPP is so hurt by my nomination as Minister for Communications, Digital
Technology and Innovations and would stop at nothing to fight it.
After failing to mobilise
their own Caucus in Parliament to vote against my nomination, they have
resorted to smear campaign and cheap lies with fake photos.
I can assure them that
the days of misinformation and cheap fabricated lies are coming to an end. The
Ministry would tighten regulations on such illegal conducts of misinformation
and disinformation in the coming weeks and sanitise our media space.
So help me God. ????????????”
The media house TV3,
which took the original and innocent photo of Sam George during an event,
quickly distanced itself from the doctored image. They issued a statement on X clarifying:
“Our attention has been drawn to a fake post circulating on social media. We
want to state categorically that what is circulating is not from TV3.”
This incident has also generated
conversations about ethical journalism and media conduct, with many criticizing
the unprofessional practice of photographing someone’s private phone screen and
sharing it publicly.
On a related note, Sam
George has officially been approved as the Minister for Communications,
Digitalisation, and Innovations. Initially, the Minority wanted a secret ballot
because of concerns about some of his past comments during vetting. But after
respected members of Parliament intervened, they backed off, and his nomination
went through smoothly.
Now leading the
Communications Ministry, Sam George has vowed to clean up the digital space and
tackle misinformation head-on.
