Residents of Teshie Adjetey Kanton Left 'Caged' at Home as Road Contractor Abandons Project
Residents of Teshie in the Greater Accra Region who live on Adjetey Kanton Street are living in distress times as the only access road is in a deplorable state due to an abandoned construction project. The motorable road became impassable when the local assembly started repairs and attempted to put up drainage systems to ensure that the road did not get flooded anytime it rained. Unfortunately, that project has stalled for some months now, bringing a lot of distress to residents.
Members of the community have complained of being denied essential services, including ambulances and garbage collectors. The deplorable state of the road has had emergency vehicles stuck, while the residents narrate heart-wrenching stories of delayed cases at critical moments. "We are suffering in this area. If you are traveling, you have to carry your luggage to the roadside," lamented one senior citizen.
"It was a project that started six weeks ago, with promises from the local authorities to fix the problems on the road. Yet, it has left residents in limbo. It's as if our authorities don't care," grumbled one exasperated resident who said no one has communicated to them what is happening with the project. Every time it rains, the road becomes increasingly dangerous and traps residents indoors.
Earlier interventions by the assembly have themselves worked against efforts by community leaders such as Dorothy Christian to mobilize residents for alternative solutions. While residents were ready to make financial contributions for repairs, the stalled project has worsened the problem.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Ledzokuku, Mordecai Quarshie, admitted that his assembly did not know what was happening, but he promised the residents the contractor would soon show up. As of late, the road is still bad, and the residents just hope something is done anytime soon for normalcy to be restored.
