Renewed Violence in Bawku Claims Two Lives, Leaves Others Injured
On October 26, 2024, new violence related to chieftaincy broke out again in Bawku, leaving two people dead and many injured. This is because a long regional misunderstanding about a chieftaincy problem has denied the area its needed peace and brothership, periodically sparking outbreaks of violence.
The new escalation became possible upon the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief whose presence was disputed in the region. Alhaji Abagre has been at the center of controversy since his installation as chief in Nalerigu in February 2023. His return to Bawku had recently been given the all-clear from a Kumasi High Court ruling on October 17, 2024, when it quashed an arrest warrant issued against him. Legally binding, the decision has just stirred the embers again of tensions that usually simmer beneath the surface among rival factions in the Bawku chieftaincy.
On the night of 26 October, the violence escalated to gunfire as rival groups clashed. The incident only mirrored the situation that had continuously reeked of volatility and imminent unrest that could always erupt in that region mainly associated with questions of traditional authority and chieftaincy rights.
It has indeed been an uphill task mediating this conflict over the years, even for the government, security agencies, and peace advocates. In the quest to achieve lasting peace in Bawku, stakeholders have emphasized the need to show commitment towards peaceful dialogue, adherence to judicial decisions, and community involvement to prevent the recurrence of bloodshed. For stability in the region at large, measures that make sure residents are safe and grievances are cared for are crucial with respect to the chieftaincy dispute.
