Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Halts Campaign Amidst Bawku Unrest
The running mate of the biggest opposition National Democratic Congress, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has suspended her campaign activities currently going on in Bawku, a town in Ghana's Upper East Region. This was announced on October 25, 2024, amidst renewed conflict and unrest in Bawku.
This suspension, the team explained, is out of respect and sensitivity to the well-being of the affected communities and is to avoid any unnecessary heightening of tension. Her tour, already ongoing in most parts of the country ahead of the December 7 elections, was supposed to make a crucial stop in Bawku. However, with the flare-ups of violence having returned, security in the region has been increased to protect the natives, while authorities have called for calm to pave the way for peaceful coexistence.
Known for her commitment to education and peaceful engagement, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has time and again assumed a sharp protector mantle on behalf of inclusive and respectful campaigns. This situation in Bawku brings into consideration the need for the analysis of the local context concerning such situations in the prioritization of community safety. She has called on the people to be calm and also to cooperate with the authorities while efforts are being made towards restoring normalcy.
While the campaign remains suspended in Bawku, the NDC has reassured its supporters that activities will resume when conditions warrant it. In this instance, peacebuilding efforts led by chiefs, district officials, and community members themselves are involved in dissipating tensions.
