Police Investigate Motor Accident in Tesano, Accra
On October 30, 2024, a ghastly motor accident occurred at the Tesano Zongo traffic intersection in Accra, which involved a Yutong bus owned by the police with registration number GP 417 and a Royal Motorbike whose registration is unknown. The Ghana Police Service has started a full-scale investigation into the accident. This incident has also stirred public interest in road safety and driver accountability, particularly drivers in public service.
The incident happened at dawn when a police bus driver, reportedly trying to avoid heavy traffic by using the opposite lane, crashed into a motorcyclist. This turned out to be a fatal move, as the motorcyclist, who was admitted to the hospital in a most critical condition, was later pronounced dead on arrival by hospital doctors. This caused heavy traffic from Tesano through the Achimota overhead going toward Nsawam.
Following the accident, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, extended contact to the bereaved family, condoled with the Ghana Police Service, and gave them the assurance that the necessary detailed investigation would be carried out to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Members of the public have reacted to this issue in mixed ways, with most reiterating the need for discipline on the roads and following traffic rules. Accidents involving police vehicles attract special attention because the police should set examples for other road users. It also again underlines the need to raise road safety by training drivers and strictly observing traffic laws in order not to have such tragedies in the future.
