Parliament to Reconvene Early November
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has pledged to reconvene Ghana's Parliament in early November at the request of the New Patriotic Party's caucus. This early recall follows a suspension of parliamentary sessions due to an impasse on the majority seat in parliament, a turn of events that saw the Supreme Court adding their voice to the proceedings.
The suspension originally came after the Speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant, which caused tension as the NPP had now become the minority and the NDC the majority. This caused chaos in parliament as both parties occupied the majority seat, and later, the NPP had to stage a walkout of parliament.
In the courtesy call from the Council of State, Speaker Bagbin reiterated his commitment to a peaceful, democratic resolution of the situation. He, therefore, assured the Council that discussions are going on with the leadership in Parliament to ensure that a functional legislative environment is restored. According to him, this reconvening in November is not only meant to deal with the debate over the majority but to afford the Members of Parliament an opportunity to discuss critical national issues and where possible, effect changes that may possibly forestall any similar standoff in the future.
The Council of State praised his efforts on the need for stability and for his neutrality in managing the current crisis. The Speaker insisted that such neutrality is a necessity in upholding Ghana's democratic values, underlining that it is only through impartial leadership that Parliament will be able to achieve the consensus which enables it to carry out functions effectively.
