Mine Confrontation At Kunsu

A sad incident occurred on Friday morning at Kunsu near Nyame Adom in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region when a security guard, with a firearm, attacked residents, killing a 17-year-old and wounding seven others. He was posted to that illegal mining site run by some Chinese.

According to eyewitnesses, locals had gone to the mining site after the Chinese operators finished their daily activities to gather whatever gold deposits were left over. A confrontation soon arose between locals and the security guard, who attempted to prevent them from accessing the site. In a bid to scare the group away, he fired his gun in their direction, hitting eight people. Unfortunately, one of the victims, a 17-year-old, was pronounced dead at the Mankranso Government Hospital.

Two of the injured have since been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment, while the rest are still undergoing treatment at the Mankranso facility. This shooting incident triggered outrage among the residents, who stormed the site and set one of the excavators on fire.

The police have since launched an investigation into the incident, but no arrests have been made because the security guard fled the scene before police arrived. The body of the deceased has since been moved to the morgue. At the same time, the local Assembly Member by the name of Felix Nkansah confirmed the involvement of the Chinese operators and the presence of locally hired security personnel.
