Oliver Barker-Vormawor Remains in Police Custody After Failing to Secure Sureties for Bail, Sustains 'Minor Injuries'

Convener of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, remains in police custody as he has been unable to secure sureties to meet his bail conditions, police sources have confirmed to the media.

The High Court granted him bail on 16 October 2024, setting the amount at GH¢20,000 with two sureties, but efforts to fulfil the bail terms have so far been unsuccessful.

Oliver, who was arrested alongside 52 others during a protest against illegal mining activities (galamsey) on 23 September 2024, faces multiple charges, including unlawful assembly and offensive conduct. His arrest has attracted significant attention due to his prominent role as an activist against environmental degradation caused by galamsey.

This recent bail decision follows several unsuccessful attempts to secure his release, as both the Accra Circuit Court and High Court had previously denied him bail, citing concerns over his potential to reoffend.

At the time of his arrest, Barker-Vormawor was already on bail for a separate treason felony charge.

In other news, the Ghana Police Service has denied beating Oliver Barker-Vormawor. In a press release, the police said Oliver only sustained minor injuries while being transferred to a different cell

They urged the general public to disregard the rumors.
