Okudzeto Ablakwa Launches GH¢100k Emergency Rent Fund for Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has unveiled a GH¢100,000 emergency rent fund to provide relief for victims affected by the Akosombo dam spillage, which occurred in October 2023.
The fund aims to support victims in securing temporary accommodation as they continue to deal with the devastating impact of the disaster.
The spillage displaced over 12,000 residents, leaving many without homes. Ablakwa’s intervention seeks to ensure the total resettlement and compensation of the victims, with a particular focus on providing immediate support for those still living in makeshift tents, including 1,360 individuals from his constituency.
During the announcement, which came after filing his nomination to contest in the upcoming elections, Ablakwa stated: "For my next term, my priority will be the total resettlement and compensation of all victims of the VRA spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. As we speak, 1,360 of our fellow constituents, my beloved constituents, remain in tents, and that is unacceptable."
He added that the GH¢100,000 rent fund will prioritize women, especially nursing mothers, who continue to bear the brunt of the displacement.
