NPP's Accusations Is A Sign of Desperation-Yusif Sulemana
Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, has denied accusations leveled against his party New Patriotic describing it as an act of desperation. According to him, the NPP believes the National Democratic Congress is planning to frustrate government business in parliament and this is a broader strategy to secure electoral victory in 2024. In an interview with Citi News, he said, "That will be desperate on their part.".
The NPP, while making these revelations, cited what it said was a document titled "Winning the 2024 Elections and Beyond A Comprehensive NDC Strategy," which they claim gives a detailed plan to employ their near-majority status, coupled with Speaker Alban Bagbin, to scuttle government business. The claims have, however, been stoutly denied by Sulemana as unfounded. According to him, the NDC does not need such devious tactics to prepare itself for the election ahead.
It was upon this that Sulemana recalled his reaction, humorously telling Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP's Director of Communication, "I had to look around to see if nobody was seeing me laughing." He said the NPP was concocting allegations, adding that their frustration is evident by desperate attempts to shift attention away from their problems. He explained that the independent candidates were declaring their intentions free and unforced, and further dared the NPP to provide evidence to corroborate the accusations.
The current standoff in Ghana's Parliament, which started when Speaker Bagbin declared the four seats vacant upon a motion from former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, adds to tension: notwithstanding the Supreme Court's ruling on the Speaker's decision, the Minority insists it is in the majority and the lack of quorum to transact business has resulted in the indefinite adjournment of Parliamentary sittings. This political standoff, in essence, points to profound issues within the current administration as all sides throw accusations and frustrations at one another.
