NPP to Engage Cynthia Morrison After Her Decision to Run as Independent Candidate for Agona West Seat

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to engage with former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, following her decision to run as an independent candidate for the Agona West seat in the 2024 general election.

This move comes after Morrison, who is the current Member of Parliament for Agona West, declared her independent candidacy after losing in the NPP parliamentary primaries.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong emphasized the party’s commitment to maintaining unity within its ranks and its goal to “break the eight,” a reference to the party’s ambition to extend its rule beyond the usual two-term limit.

Addressing her constituents, Cynthia Morrison stated, “God willing, I will be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.” Despite the setback in the primaries, Morrison reaffirmed her dedication to the progress of Agona West and urged her supporters to rally behind her independent bid.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Thursday, August 22, 2024, Kodua Frimpong highlighted the NPP’s focus on unity and its efforts to bring all members, including those contemplating independent runs, back into the party fold. “As a political party, for this year’s election which has been our mantra, we are going to break the eight. In breaking the eight means we need to do exceptional things and bring everybody on board. Our objective is to make sure that all our party faithful are brought on board,” he stated.

He further explained that the party would take steps to engage Morrison and others considering independent candidacies, stressing that the leadership is committed to bringing everyone back into the fold. “What we want to do is to bring everybody on board…the party leadership will continue to engage her,” Kodua Frimpong added.

The NPP’s efforts to address internal divisions and maintain unity are seen as crucial to their strategy for the upcoming elections, as they seek to secure a third consecutive term in office.
