NPP Sacks North Dayi Youth Organizer
The New Patriotic Party has sacked Addae Bright, Youth Organiser for the RC Primary Anfoega Wadamaxe polling station in North Dayi constituency, in what has been termed a great statement of party loyalty. Present at an NDC rally at Botoku, Bright had declared his public support for the NDC candidate, Joycelyn Tetteh, and its flagbearer, John Mahama - a direct contravention of the constitution of the NPP.
According to Article 3(9)(1) of the constitution of the NPP, "A member of the party who supports a candidate for election to public office in opposition to an authorized candidate of the party is ipso facto no longer a member of the party." By publicly declaring his alignment with the NDC at this rally, which was heavily charged with political activities, Bright had crossed the line that led to his immediate dismissal from the party. Such a decision was contained in a statement issued by the NPP's North Dayi Constituency Secretary, Mr. Baku Emmanuel K., dated 14th October 2024, where members were urged to treat Bright as no longer a member of the party.
The action of the NPP underpins that it enforces internal discipline, at least with the 2024 elections in view. However, this has evoked debates as to the consistency of the party with their rules. Critics argue that the party has been lenient in similar cases where independent candidates once were NPP members but retained their seats despite defying party directives. This is, therefore, a fair question of whether Bright's expulsion is all about justice and whether the party will apply a uniform approach to every act of breach of its constitution.
