NPP-NDC Mamobi Clash Suspect Arrested
The arrest of one Fatawu Ibrahim, alias Fatau Motorway, who was captured on video wielding a gun during the disturbance that erupted between supporters of the NPP and the NDC at Mamobi in Accra on October 13, 2024. Two people reportedly sustained injuries in the process, which sparked uproar over the safety of citizens, compelling the police to step up their investigations.
In a statement, police said Ibrahim's arrest was facilitated by viral video footage of him holding a gun amidst the chaos. The video, which went viral on various social media and major news channels, helped the investigators to quickly trace and apprehend Ibrahim.
Currently, Ibrahim is in police custody, awaiting court dates, while the police continue their investigations to ascertain what happened in detail. This is a major arrest in the context of what the authorities are trying to do to look at root causes for political clashes and to hold responsible those who incite or escalate violent confrontations.
Political tensions between the NPP and the NDC have been a cause for concern in Ghana, especially during election cycles; incidents involving armed violence raise those tensions to a critical level that puts both the public and democratic stability in jeopardy. Law enforcement agencies had assured the public of their commitment to ensuring that politically motivated violence would be curtailed and peace and order maintained, especially with the approach of the 2024 election period.
The quick arrest of Ibrahim by the police is proof of how technology, in the form of video evidence, can help the police, and also it stresses the need for cooperation among the public in bringing about accountability in cases that are highly politicized.
