NDC Stands Firm Against Attempts to Disenfranchise Ghanaians in Togo

The tension is building up as Ghana inches toward the general elections in 2024. The National Democratic Congress has taken a firm stand as they have decided to fight for the rights of Ghanaians living in Togo.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia has declared categorically that the party will not allow the denial of rights to these citizens to take place.

He spoke about the issue passionately at a rally held in Ziope, Agotime Ziope Constituency close to the Ghana-Togo border. According to him, the NDC will meet any attempts at discriminating against those cross-border voters with stiff resistance. He pointed out what he sees as an inconsistency in the government's position on Ghanaians voting abroad.

Asiedu Nketiah further added that ROPAL passed under the incumbent NPP administration, allows all Ghanaians living abroad to vote but when it comes to those living in Togo, there is a huge question mark. He said:

If you are a Ghanaian living in America and you fly into Kotoka International Airport, you are allowed to vote. But if you're Ghanaian in Togo and the guy crosses the border to vote in his hometown, he gets classified as a foreigner. We can't accept this discrimination.

Given the high stakes in the upcoming elections, Asiedu Nketia did not mince his words about possible challenges that voters may face. His comments underscore a broader concern about voter suppression, most specifically in opposition strongholds.

Going forward, Asiedu Nketia made a direct appeal to the people of Agotime Ziope to stand by the NDC and vote for change in December 2024, in respect of the fact that traditionally, the constituency has been an opposition party stronghold.

"You suffer the most when the NPP is in power. "That's your choice, but if you want to continue to live under hardship, that is up to you, but we don't need to convince you to vote NDC," he concluded, as he directly linked their well-being with the election.

The Parliamentary candidate for the NDC in the Agotime Ziope constituency, Charles Agbeve, who also spoke at the rally, asked the electorates to come out in their numbers on December 7th. The NDC is targeting 25,000 votes in the constituency, which will be critical in their quest to regain power.
