National Service Authority Officially Unveiled
On October 18, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched the National Service Authority's largest transformation since the establishment of the National Service Scheme.
The unveiling follows the passage of the National Service Authority Bill 2024, which gives the NSA a legal mandate for the implementation of policies and programs that ensure the mobilization of service personnel in areas that have been identified as national interest.
It is far more than just a change of name, for the NSA can now enter into contractual agreements, a limitation the previous scheme faced. The new authority, as is expected, is to play an even more expansive role in nation-building, such as equipping the youth with employable skills, and preparing them better for the job market post-service.
The President praised the many important contributions of the institution to national development especially those about which it had a financial bearing: "It saves the country some GHC 3 billion annually in wage cost."
The President sounded his optimism about the future of the NSA, particularly when the possible leadership of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, may lead this. In its new form, the NSA is envisioned to solidify its role as one of the driving forces in youth development through national goals of economic growth and preparedness of the labor force.
This now opens a new chapter in the history of national service in Ghana-a vital step in preparing young Ghanaians for the skills and opportunities needed to face an ever-changing world.
