On Monday, December 16, 2024, the locals of Sekondi-Takoradi woke up to surprising news: The statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, had been vandalized. A large hole was spotted at the back of one of the statue’s legs, and its commemorative plaque had been removed.

The Ghana Police Service quickly stepped in to investigate. In an official statement, the police confirmed the damage, stating, “The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigation into the damage caused to the statue of His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital Roundabout in Sekondi, Western Region. Preliminary investigations by the Police have revealed that the statue's left leg has been damaged, and its plaque removed. The statue was unveiled to celebrate projects launched during Akufo-Addo’s time in office. These projects include the renovation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the development of the 3-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle.

Residents are confused about how the statue, located in a quiet area far from homes or heavy foot traffic, could have been vandalized without anyone noticing. Some people believe the damage was intentional, while others think it might be a result of a structural fault.

As the investigation continues, the police have vowed to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.
