Mahama Hints NDC Has Learned from NPP’s Failures and Will Not Lead with Arrogance
John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s newly elected
president, has made it clear that his victory is a direct response to the
failed leadership of the NPP over the past eight years. In his victory speech,
he touched on the country’s struggles under the NPP administration. Mahama said the election was a clear signal
from Ghanaians that they will no longer tolerate poor governance.
“For all its historic undertones, this mandate represents many things for all political actors and those who seek to lead our nation,” Mahama stated. He emphasized that Ghanaians have had enough of bad governance, particularly what they’ve experienced under the NPP in recent years. “It shows that the Ghanaian people have little tolerance for bad governance, particularly what we have witnessed in the last eight years,” he said.
Mahama didn’t hold back when reflecting on
the challenges the country has faced under the NPP leadership. “These eight
years have witnessed some of the darkest periods of our governance,” he
remarked. He also emphasized that the harm caused by the NPP will take time to
heal. “The crisis our beloved country has been through these last several years
has left a scar on our national psyche, which may take some time to erase,” he
said, highlighting the long-lasting effects of the NPP’s time in power.
He continued by cautioning himself and his
fellow NDC members, reminding them of the consequences if they fail to serve
the people. “This mandate also serves as a constant reminder of what fate
awaits us if we fail to meet the aspirations of our people and govern with
arrogance,” he said, calling for humility and a focus on serving the people
above all.
