Mahama and Akufo-Addo Agree on December 11 Transition Date
John Dramani Mahama, Ghana's newly elected
president, shared details of a phone call he received from outgoing President
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In his victory speech, Mahama said that Akufo-Addo
congratulated him on his win and they discussed how the transition of power
will take place.
“I just received a call from His
Excellency, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Mahama said. “He
graciously extended his congratulations to me, and we had the opportunity to
discuss matters related to the Joint Transitional Team.”
Mahama explained that the two agreed to start the transition process quickly. “We agreed on an early inauguration of the joint transitional team as early as Wednesday, December 11,” he said. “I conveyed my sincerest regards to him and expressed my readiness for us to work together to ensure a smooth transition in the best interest of the Ghanaian people.” '

In his speech, Mahama celebrated the
election of Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female vice president. He
praised her for her leadership and the example she sets for women.
“Nana, your decency, your humility, and
your sense of responsibility added so much to this campaign,” Mahama said. “The
eyes of every young girl and woman, not only in Ghana but in nations across
this continent and the world, are going to be on you from today.”
He added, “You have not only opened the
door, but you’re going to keep the door open for many other women. Your name
has become synonymous with breaking boundaries. Because of you, the people of
Ghana can today celebrate the fact that we have made history by electing our
first woman as vice president.”
As Mahama prepares to take office, he
expressed his commitment to working together with all Ghanaians to build a
better future.
