Judicial Service of Ghana Assures Swift Resolution of Election-Related Matters

The Judicial Service has assured the public of its readiness and determination to promptly deal with any disputes that may arise in respect of the impending 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Ghana. This is in the wake of a one-day dialogue session between the Judiciary and a Group of Eminent Persons from the Christian Council of Ghana. The session, which was held in Accra, was graced by some key judicial figures: the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, and members of the Elections Management Committee chaired by His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie.

The Chief Justice, in her address, urged Ghanaians to have faith in the commitment of the judiciary to ensuring peaceful coexistence through the timely and just determination of all election disputes. She said the courts would work within the strict framework of the recently published Manual on Election Adjudication, 5th edition, which is the instructional guide for dealing with election disputes.

Justice Baffoe Bonnie revealed the proactive steps taken by the Judiciary to prepare for the upcoming elections. The Elections Management Committee, established during the 2023/2024 legal year, has played an instrumental role in ensuring preparedness by the Judiciary to manage the intricacies of election-related cases.

These efforts are key to securing democracy for Ghana, and this is because there have been quite several disputes over elections in that country. Preceding on this note, any form of delay may lead to a loss of people's trust in the process, so by promising swift hearings, the Judiciary aims to avoid that.

The assurance by Judicial Service gives an assurance that there will be some stability, and any legal disputes arising from the elections will be heard immediately to ensure peace and order during the 2024 elections.
