Joana Gyan Cudjoe Fights Back Against Petition To Block Her Candidacy
In the developing political tussle, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress candidate for Amenfi Central, has challenged a petition against her candidature with an urgent application for the interlocutory injunction preventing her from holding herself out as the legitimate NDC candidate. But fighting back with its legal team Ayine and Associates, lawyers of Gyan Cudjoe have filed their processes at the court.
The lawyers for Gyan Cudjoe, in a letter dated 15th October 2024, wrote to the EC in response to the petition. It said despite claims by the petitioners, Gyan Cudjoe is and remains the duly elected candidate of the NDC. According to the applicants, the September 24, 2024 order interdicts Gyan Cudjoe from being declared the NDC candidate and hence prevents both the NDC and the EC from affording her any privileges or rights as a parliamentary candidate.
The political tension in Amenfi Central heightened after the incumbent Member of Parliament, Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah announced his decision to contest as an independent candidate. Kwakye-Ackah lost the NDC primary to Joana Gyan Cudjoe, a result that seems to have divided the party's supporters in the constituency.
This legal fight further complicates the Amenfi Central race, with the elections in December inching closer. In a race that is seeing the Kwakye-Ackah contest as an independent, Joana Gyan Cudjoe battling the courts, the contest could very well alter the political landscape in the Western Region.
For now, all eyes are on the Electoral Commission and how it will handle the appeal that could determine the outcome of this intense political standoff.
