GJA Demands Arrest and Prosecution of Assaulters of EIB Journalist
The Ghana Journalists Association has strongly condemned the assault on EIB Network's court correspondent, Murtala Inusah. This unfortunate incident happened on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Accra High Court, where sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako were said to have attacked the journalist. The bishop made an appearance in court alongside his wife, Mouha Amoako, over a tragic accident involving their 16-year-old son, Elrad Amoako, which claimed two lives in East Legon.
In a press statement, the GJA described the attack on the journalist as "devilish." Murtala Inusah was at the court to cover the case and sustained injuries including cuts on his fingers and severe body pains. Inusah is said to have been assaulted after he took a shot of the court in session action that appeared to have incurred the wrath of some of the sympathizers of the suspects. His mobile phone was also stolen.
GJA further revealed that a police officer who intervened to save the journalist was also assaulted, a situation that has led to widespread outrage within the media fraternity. GJA is calling on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly arrest and prosecute the assailants to ensure justice is served.
"The attack on the journalist and the police officer performing their legitimate duties is reprehensible and demands the full force of the law," said the GJA statement.
It has also called on the judiciary to impose stiff punishments on the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent and show clear abhorrence for such attacks on journalists in the line of duty.
