OVERVIEW 

Vanderbilt University's Department of English is accepting applications for its 2025 doctorate degree in English program. APPLICATION FEE

The Graduate school application fee is $95.00 but can be waived for only a few international students under certain conditions.

 A small number of application fee waivers are granted to international students at the discretion of the program they are applying to. One may request an application fee waiver directly from their program after submitting a complete application and confirming that a fee is due.

Automatic application fee waivers are given to applicants who submit a complete application before the deadline and have also attended either a Vanderbilt sponsored program, research, or fellowship that is officially recognized and registered in the school's system.

STANDARD FINANCIAL SUPPORT

All students admitted to the doctoral program will receive full tuition coverage and an initial stipend of $34,000, as well as a comprehensive health insurance package.

Students will also receive a one-time stipend of $2000 to help with moving and settling cost. The stipend will be disbursed in summer before the student arrives.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT OPTIONS

English department sponsored funding for graduate workshops, public lectures and summer programs, academic travel and research development, research assistantshipsand academic job search support. 

Graduate school-sponsored funding, which entails $5000 in merit awards for doctoral students under the university graduate fellowship and up to $1,000 per trip under the graduate school travel grant.

College of Arts and Science funding, which also covers up to $3000 for summer research awards, $5000 for summer language training and other awards for professional development.

University sponsored funding worth $5,000 to serve as a top-up for the student's base stipend. This award is offered to students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

Dissertation fellowships, which encompass awards given to doctoral students in humanities or qualitative social sciences and doctoral students interested in enrolling in the Comparative Media Analysis and Practice (CMAP) program.

Components of the Application Process 

  • Statement of purpose not more than 1,500 words
  • Writing samples not more than 25 pages. Creative writing is not accepted and remember combine multiple pieces into one PDF before submitting.
  • Three letters of recommendation 
  • Unofficial transcripts when applying with official transcripts required upon admittance. The official transcripts can be sent directly from your previous institution to Vanderbilt University through cdm@vanderbilt.edu.
  • TOEFL and IELTS scores are accepted for international students whose native language is not English.English language waiver
  • GRE scores are not needed for admission.
