Enhanced Security Measures in Place for Tuesday’s Parliament Sitting
Parliament has announced stringent security measures with a highly anticipated sitting set for Tuesday, October 22, 2024. The leadership's decision to increase security comes amidst growing tension following the controversial ruling by the Speaker of Parliament, which changed the balance of power in the House. The protocols now aimed at securing the Speaker, MPs, and parliamentary staff were announced in a statement signed by Deputy Marshall WG CDR Frederick Bawa (Rtd).
Changes include screening all persons entering the Chamber, including MPs, staff, and members of the press. The bodyguards that accompany the MPs to the house will also no longer be allowed inside the Chamber. These are significant policy changes put in place to increase security while maintaining order in sessions.
Other measures include strict control of parking within the vicinity of the Grand Arena and the AICC, allowing entry only to designated vehicles, and insisting on approved drop-off points for VIPs. The Ghana Police Service would regulate traffic to ensure smooth access and security around Parliament.
Another important change requires MPs to wear identification tags at all times for easy identification by the security personnel. Public access to the gallery has also been suspended, further sealing up security around parliamentary activities.
This increased security comes amid high political temperatures after the Speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant. A decision that has engrossed the country in a constitutional debate with the Supreme Court intervening to stay the ruling pending a final decision. Tuesday's sitting promises to be pivotal amidst what many watch will be the turn of events as far as the balance of power in Parliament is concerned.
