Duty-Free Vehicle Import Program for Nurses to Be Introduced by Bawumia – NAPO
At a cheering ceremony at the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, made an interesting declaration of a major policy to transform the lives of nurses in Ghana. He announced that should Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia become President in 2025, nurses would be enjoying duty-free imports on vehicles whose engine capacities were below 1.8 liters. The announcement, which was made on October 23, 2024, was greeted with wild applause from the nursing trainees who attended the function.
Napo emphasized that nurses are indispensable to Ghana's healthcare system and that the NPP appreciates their efforts and is determined to make life easier for them. This was in addition to the duty-free vehicle import policy he assured that the Bawumia-led government would bring in further interventions to improve the quality of life for nurses, including the continuation of the nursing trainee allowance. He emphasized that this allowance, reinstated under the NPP, was to be scrapped if the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, and former President John Mahama returned to power.
Besides, Napo said the NPP was committed to continuing to develop healthcare infrastructures by completing the Agenda 111 hospital projects to make sure there is an expansion of health services and, consequently, jobs for nurses and other professionals.
This gesture by the NPP led by Dr. Prempeh adds a plus to the political party as one that really cares for healthcare workers, thereby increasing its chances before the 2024 elections.
