Director of Education Condemns Alleged Gang Rape involving Mpraeso SHS Students
Eight male students attending Mpraeso Senior High School have been involved in an alleged gang rape case that has been strongly condemned by the Eastern Regional Education Director, Dr. Ivy Asantewa Owusu. The incident has shocked the local community and has raised concerns about student behavior and safety in schools.
Speaking on the matter, Dr.Ivy Owusu described the situation as quite dire, considering that five of the students have been remanded into police custody for 10 days. Three other students currently at large are being sought after by the police under a bench warrant. "They've been caught and their charge is rape," she said. "What are they going to do with their lives now? Which school will they attend again because now everything is coded?"
The Nkawkaw District Court presided over by His Worship Isaac Agyei had earlier discharged the suspects owing to some discrepancies in the charge sheet. They were, however, quickly rearrested and re-arraigned. The headmaster of Mpraeso SHS, Mr James Affadu has also been summoned by the court over why the incident was not promptly reported to the police.
Dr. Owusu further cautioned against the rise of indiscipline and irrelevant relationships among students, and even among teachers and students. In a speech at the 25th-anniversary celebration of Pentecost SHS in Koforidua, she denounced the moral situation characterized by some schools. The theme for the event, "25 Years of Nurturing Future Leaders of Excellence and Virtue," reminds one of how imperative character development is, besides academic success.
This sad incident has brought to the fore the need for greater intervention by the education authorities to ensure safety and discipline for all students throughout the schools.
