Court Issues Injunction On Cynthia Morrison's Independent Bid for Agona West
The political future of Cynthia Mamle Morrison now hangs in the balance, as a District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru has granted an injunction against her independent candidature for the Agona West parliamentary seat.
The court ordered Morrison to desist from participating in the nomination process for Member of Parliament in the Agona West Constituency, thereby throwing her electoral ambitions into uncertainty ahead of the 2024 general elections.
A former Member of Parliament for Agona West and Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Morrison won the seat for the New Patriotic Party in both 2016 and 2020. Her bid to represent the party a third consecutive time got a hit when she lost in the NPP primaries this April to one Christopher Arthur. Christopher Arthur secured 240 votes to Morrison's 152.

Feeling sidelined and frustrated with the party's internal processes, which she said were characterized by nepotism and a lack of transparency, Morrison has resolved to contest upcoming elections as an independent candidate. She has blamed the NPP leadership for what she describes as a lack of fairness in affording her an equal opportunity, despite her huge contributions to the constituency and the party's success in previous elections.
The injunction by the court brings into sharp focus what Morrison will do next. The elections are at the door, and it is yet to be seen how this controversial case would continue to pan out if she were to re-enter the race. For the time being, her candidature has been put on hold, and the political landscape in Agona West has been rendered a little uncertain.
