Court Denies Ama Governor's Travel Request
The Accra Circuit Court, on October 11, 2024, dismissed an application by Elorm Ababio, alias Ama Governor, who is standing trial in connection with the protest that occurred at the Democracy Hub. This was when the court heard the case involving some 52 protesters.
Ama Governor's legal team, through an application, sought her permission to leave the country between October 13 and 18 to attend an engagement. Her lawyer also asked the court to dismiss the assault on a public officer charge against her.
However, the prosecution, led by State Attorney Amanda Awadi, opposed this, indicating that these developments were not before the court officially and so called for further disclosures to be filed accordingly.
Presiding Judge Evelyn Asamoah said Ama Governor's lawyers had not put the request for travel on paper; that is why the request was declined. The judge ordered the prosecution to file all the necessary witness statements and adjourned the case to October 30.
Protests at the Democracy Hub have become a talking point in discussing civil liberties and the right of peaceful assembly in Ghana. As the case continues to make its way through the courts, it is most likely to raise questions on the balance between public order and the protection of individual freedoms.
