CAF Approves Accra Sports Stadium for Crucial AFCON Qualifier

CAF’s decision came after a thorough inspection of both the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Stadium last week. While both venues were evaluated, Cape Coast Stadium was ultimately rejected in favour.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the Accra Sports Stadium as the venue for Ghana's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Sudan.
The Black Stars will face the Falcons of Jediane on Friday, October 11, 2024, in a pivotal matchday three encounter of the qualifying series for the tournament, which will be hosted by Morocco in 2025. of Accra Sports Stadium. This comes after the temporary approval of Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi was revoked due to non-compliance with CAF's hosting standards, resulting in a ban from hosting future games.
In a statement confirming the decision, CAF emphasised the importance of immediate improvements to the Accra Sports Stadium. “Following a comprehensive review of the reports of the CAF independent inspection regarding the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025," the statement read.
CAF also stressed the need for urgent upgrades, stating, “In light of this approval, we kindly request that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the stadium management team prioritise the necessary enhancements to the pitch and other critical areas of the stadium leading up to the match day to ensure an optimal experience for both teams and the attending fans."
The approval is a boost for Ghana, currently struggling in their AFCON qualifying campaign. The Black Stars have yet to secure a victory in their opening two matches, drawing against Angola and Niger. This upcoming fixture against Sudan is seen as a must-win for the team as they aim to get their qualification back on track.
However, with the clock ticking toward the October 11 fixture, it is crucial that authorities take immediate steps to address CAF's concerns. Improvements to the playing surface, facilities, and fan experience are necessary not only for the upcoming qualifier but also to ensure the stadium remains fit to host future CAF-sanctioned events.
