Bawumia: I Will Reduce Unemployment and Promote Locally Made Goods with One Policy
Vice President and presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to introduce the ‘Buy Ghana First’ policy aimed at reducing unemployment and promoting the purchase of locally made products.
Dr. Bawumia revealed that before releasing his manifesto, he visited the Volta Star Textile Factory in Juapong and observed the company's struggles due to low demand. “When I went to Volta Star, it was a company in trouble. They’re manufacturing textiles, but there’s little demand for their products. They’re even importing school uniforms. They are rather importing these textiles from other countries,” he noted.

According to Bawumia, the policy aims to support all Ghanaian manufacturers by requiring citizens to prioritize purchasing locally made goods, thereby increasing their demand. He guaranteed that even the government will adhere to this policy.
He explained “It means that for all the things that government buys, and government buys a lot, the law will require that we buy Ghana first. If there is a company making that product in Ghana you have to first source that particular product from the Ghanaian company. And if you are not able to produce it in Ghana, that is the only time you are allowed to look outside to buy.”
Dr. Bawumia believes that once this policy is passed, struggling companies like the Volta Star Textile Factory will survive.
