Bagbin Recalls Parliament to Sit on November 7

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has summoned Members of Parliament to return on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM in the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. He has, therefore, done this in an attempt to resolve the outstanding issues that have stalled proceedings in Parliament for some time now.

The Supreme Court granted a stay of execution for Speaker Bagbin's declaration of four vacant seats. After a writ from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. However, such a ruling could not ease the increasing tension between the Majority and Minority groups in Parliament.

Matters came to a standstill when the Speaker, in the sitting just ended, adjourned it after members of the Minority caucus occupied the side of the House belonging to the Majority, taking advantage of their temporary numerical superiority following the declaration of the seat vacant.

The period of inactivity has seen key bills and policy discussions put on hold, threatening to delay key programs by the government and the public sector. Reconvening aims to steady the proceedings and try to take up urgent policy matters and return the institution to its normal state.
