Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate, has advised National Democratic Congress (NDC) members that they must run for and win the election if they wish to establish a majority in parliament.

Dr. Bawumia made this statement after mocking opposition lawmakers in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to halt the speaker of Parliament's decision to declare seats vacant. “Just yesterday they had the 24-hour majority, the 24-hour majority, the shortest-lived majority that I know of in history.

If you want the majority,  come to the polling stations, the constituency, win an election, and then go to parliament; you can’t stay in parliament and manufacture a majority for yourselves,” Dr. Bawumia said on Saturday, October 19, during his campaign.

If elections were held today, the NPP would have a decisive majority; we are going to the polls, and we know we’ll win a decisive majority, so let us all come together and vote in our numbers,” he added.

On Friday, October 18, the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to acknowledge the four Members of Parliament and permit them to remain in office until the case was decided. This comes after the Speaker proclaimed four parliamentary seats empty on Thursday, October 17. The following are the legislators and their constituencies:

  1. Cynthia Morrison, the Central Region's Agona West NPP MP, has declared her intention to run as an independent.

According to Bawumia, the 24-hour Majority is the shortest-lived Majority in history

2. The current NPP MP for the Eastern Region's Suhum constituency, Kwadwo Asante, has declared his intention to run as an independent.

3. Currently serving as an independent Member of Parliament for the Ashanti Region's Fomena constituency, Andrew Asiamah Amoako has registered to run for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the next election.

4. Amenfi Central's Peter Kwakye Ackah, NDC.

Invoking Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution, which states that a lawmaker must resign their seat if they leave the party they were elected to or try to remain in Parliament as an independent candidate, former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu had petitioned the Speaker to declare the seats vacant.

Afenyo-Markin, the majority leader, has sued the Supreme Court in opposition to Haruna Iddrisu's plea.
